When is Pancake Day?
This year, Pancake day falls on Tuesday 28th February.
It always falls 47 days before Easter which means the date may change, but it will always stay between 3rd February and 9th March.
So… how did Shrove Tuesday come about?
‘Shrove Tuesday’ originates from the word ‘shrive’, which means absolution for sins by doing penance. It is a Christian tradition where they admit their sins to a priest and ask for absolution. A ‘pancake bell’ would be rung to call them to admissions, and it is still ringing to this day. The day is all about trying to be ‘shriven’ before Lent.
In other places, such as the US, they refer to it as ‘Mardi Gras’ (Fat Tuesday) in French, mainly because we eat up all the fatty junk foods just before Lent.
The day itself came much later as a way of using up rich foods, such as eggs, milk and sugar before giving it all up for 40 days.
The actual tradition of making pancakes is believed to originate from a pagan ritual, although some say each ingredient represents the four pillars of faith which is Christian. Eggs for creation, flour sustenance or the staff of life, salt for wholesomeness and milk for purity.
